Alehn advocates for policies targeting food waste reduction and transformation into affordable protein, emphasizing the need for industry support in transforming food systems sustainably.

Mother Nature, says Alexander Smalls, is talking to us. And we need to listen.  “[When] your menu reflects what is bountiful at that particular time, you start to allow Mother Nature to participate in how you create your menus and the products that you offer,” he says. “We need to be informed by the earth.” Alexander is a chef, restaurateur, culinary activist and author. But he calls himself an artist, and food is his medium. With five restaurants in New York and an African Dining Hall, Al Boland, at Expo 2020, he knows that the entire food system has to change. “We're going to have to start to make very difficult choices about what kinds of food we prepare…and we're going to have to look for guidelines that help us to solidify better systems,” he says.

Allison Agsten grew up in a place so rural that after her dad built their house, her mom made up the address. She grew up on and with the land, and it’s what led her to the work she does today. A former broadcast producer, Allison believes that telling the climate story is not just about the words, it’s about the pictures. “We need to humanize this…We are a deeply visual culture, now more than ever. We can’t afford to just show the low hanging fruit with the most important story of our time.” 

Allison, the Director of USC Annenberg’s Center for Climate Journalism and Communications, trains journalists, scientists, activists, students and others on how to talk about climate. If we don’t know how to talk effectively about what’s happening, she believes, we’ll never be able to solve this challenge.

Redonda, once a rat-ridden isle that resembled the surface of the moon, has emerged as a stunning model of island restoration. This Caribbean gem faced ecological collapse, but an ambitious conservation project turned the tide. Redonda's revival serves as a beacon, demonstrating how concerted efforts can resurrect ecosystems and offer hope for biodiversity hotspots worldwide.

From peril to paradise

APSWDP under the aegis of The Climate Reality Project-India and South Asia initiated a project titled ‘Climate Change Education and Educating Youth & Educator’ on creating awareness on Climate Change Adaptation through a fleet of nine trained climate leaders from Honorable Al Gore Noble Laureate and Former Vice-President USA. The objective of this on-going project is to train school teachers, college educators and university academicians under Teachers Training Programme and working with educational institutions for developing green campus under Green Campus Programme (GCP) since 2015. The project has trained more than 350 teachers and prospective teachers in addition to more than 10000 youth from school, colleges and universities in the Chandigarh region and is ongoing. In addition, APSWDP also do advocacy, lobbying with corporate companies, educational institutions, government agencies to organize dialogue, seminars, conferences, panel discussions and symposiums to start and lead a conversation on Life Style and Behaviour Modification.

Ayman is addressing climate change through innovative solar technology. Wahaj Solar’s patented ASC solar concentrator offers solutions to many challenges faced by existing solar energy technologies and reduces the global carbon footprint. 

Ayman advocates for the utilization of green energy technologies to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Wahaj Solar engage with local stakeholders, providing low-cost green sustainable solutions and cooperating with entities like the Clean Business Council and Masdar City. Ayman finds green hydrogen production and Solar Heat for Industrial Process (SHIP) promising in addressing climate change.

Solar Mamas is not just about climate change. The program operates in the poorest communities, often with women who are illiterate, yet responsible for their household and in need of tools to lift them out of poverty. In these communities, scarcity is everywhere – in water, power, education, and more. So when Barefoot College International comes in and trains these women to be build, install and maintain solar units for their villages, they are doing more than just building a community for environmental sustainability. They are helping the planet, and tackling the myriad barriers that keep these women in poverty. 

And yet the environmental impact is significant. Many of these communities have never been on the grid, so their first experience with power is through solar. To date, Barefoot College has trained women in 93 countries across the global south, giving the skills and education needed to show how sustainability, gender equality and better livelihoods can all intersect to benefit entire communities.

When Beks Ndlovu was young, elephants and lions would sometimes wander into his village from the nearby Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. When this would happen, Beks and his family would bang pots and pans in a bid to scare animals away and yet one time, Beks followed them, led  by an innate desire to learn more about what he has come to observe as gentle giants.  The experience stayed with him and today he is the founder of and a guide for African Bush Camps, which takes travellers through Africa with local guides and a focus on experiencing the nature and the culture of Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Beks also founded the African Bush Camps Foundation, a nonprofit focused on conservation, education, and empowerment for the communities that surround the company’s camp locations.

A safari business that addresses the imbalances and injustices of Africa

In Bijal Brahmbhatt’s home country of India, the most vulnerable populations are those contributing the least to climate change, yet feeling the effects the most. Yet her organization, Mahlia Housing Trust, believes that the women in these communities have the power to drive progress towards more sustainable and gender-inclusive cities. They just need the right knowledge and the right tools. That’s what Mahlia Housing Trust is all about. “How do women become leaders so that they reach the very last mile, so that they get heat resilient housing for everyone, and quality water, and so that malaria is eradicated?” she says. For almost 30 years, Mahlia Housing Trust has mobilized women to exercise their civic rights and empowered them to take charge of their habitat improvement process. By forging unique relationships with poor communities and local governments, the organization has advanced access to basic services, promoted climate resilience, and deepened participatory governance.

Enabling women to improve their cities

Björn is revolutionizing the nitrogen fertilizer process to address climate change. NitroCapt is electrifying this process, making it more energy-efficient and cost-effective than fossil-dependent and hydrogen processes. Their clean technology promises to decarbonize the nitrogen fertilizer industry quickly. Björn advocates for a ban on fossil fuel subsidies, a global carbon tax similar to the EU's, and a tenfold increase in investments for scaling up existing climate technologies. He draws inspiration from H2GreenSteel and Cemvision, companies producing CO2-neutral steel and cement respectively.

But his company, Ampd Energy, wants to build a future where the construction industry is emission-free. The organization's mission is to close the global coverage gap of these services, which are increasingly threatened by climate change. They use a systems-strengthening approach, layering on climate risks and adaptations to strengthen the entire system. Water For People is also addressing financial challenges at global, national, and local levels, advocating for fair distribution of climate financing. 

Cate emphasizes the need for urgency without resorting to quick fixes, prioritizing sustainable services and considering the broader freshwater ecosystem. In Uganda, the organization is rehabilitating wetlands near drinking water wells to manage groundwater fluctuation. This nature-based solution is seen as the most sustainable and cost-effective way to secure water resources. This work goes beyond infrastructure, involving collaboration with local ministries and focusing on long-term, sustainable solutions.

Cecilia Herzog says she really woke up to climate change 15 years ago. That’s when she wrote a bestselling book, The Nature of Cities, about the relationship between cities, people and nature. A trained urban landscape planner, Herzog is moved by the loss of biodiversity in our urban environments, and has become a researcher and advocate for returning nature to cities, and resilient urban neighborhoods. In the heart of Türkiye, a wave of change began to swell, not from the echelons of power or the whispers of the old guard, but from the vibrant energy and unwavering determination of its youth. A group of spirited young individuals, bound by the shared vision of a cleaner, greener earth, embarked on a journey that would soon leave an indelible mark on their country’s landscape and consciousness. 

It was World Cleanup Day, a day that would witness a historic mobilization of over 27,000 citizens, each one drawn by the infectious zeal of these young eco-warriors. From the bustling streets of Istanbul to the sun-kissed shores of Antalya, people from all walks of life, armed with gloves, bags, and an unquenchable spirit, bent down together to lift up their nation. 

As the day progressed, mountains of trash were transformed into molehills, rivers regained their pristine sparkle, and parks breathed anew, all while a sense of camaraderie and hope filled the air. This was not merely a cleanup;it was a movement, a testament to the power of youth to lead and inspire. 

The impact of their efforts rippled far beyond the tangible. Government institutions, once unmoved by the growing environmental challenges, began to take notice. Municipalities, previously ensnared in bureaucratic lethargy, were jolted into action. Policies started shifting, conversations were sparked, and the seeds of sustainability were sown, all because a group of young people dared to care deeply and act boldly. 

Their story is not just one of environmental triumph but also of a cultural awakening. It is a narrative that underscores the profound influence young minds can wield, the bridges they can build across communities, and the waves of change they can generate through unity and purpose. 

As the sun set on World Cleanup Day, the young visionaries of Türkiye stood amid the landscapes they had rejuvenated, their faces alight with the glow of accomplishment. They had not only cleaned up their country but had also set a precedent for future generations, a clear message that when the youth lead, the world follows.

In 2012, Charlot’s daughter was badly burned by a charcoal-burning stove.  These stoves are also a significant cause of respiratory infections, and a major contributor to pollution. In 2017, Charlot founded Mukuru Clean Stoves, that use processed biomass and burn much cleaner: up to 90% less pollution than an open fire, and 70% less than a traditional cookstove. They are also more affordable, halving ongoing fuel costs. Since 2017, Mukuru has sold over 250,000 clean cookstoves, saving families over $20M in fuel costs, and contributing to cleaner air for 1.2M people.

To address the massive challenge of plastic waste, Coliba has created a technology-based system to enable an effective circular economy. By using a mobile app, waste pickers (known as ‘Coliba Rangers’, 80% of whom are female) can respond to requests for recycling services from homes and businesses. Coliba collects and processes the waste, and sells it on to manufacturers as plastic ‘flakes’ and ‘bales’ of PET plastic bottles. Discarded waste becomes the source material for another life.

The Cranleigh School in Abu Dhabi is committed to enabling a better understanding of the importance of sustainability for the next generation. But what they really want is to actually empower their students to create the change that is needed. 

Cranleigh’s curriculum includes a sustainability component, where students present pitches on how they can make our school more sustainable by having a localized impact on the achievement of one of the 17 UN SDGs.

Their students will be part of COP28 as well, presenting urban development and policy ideas that they’ve been developing alongside experts throughout the year. As we work to fight climate change today, Cranleigh is educating, and providing real-world experience, to the next generation of climate actionists.

"But I’m an optimist, and I’m a mother and I just don’t see any other way. Sometimes I wish I just didn’t care, and could buy plastic bottles and eat whatever — I just can’t allow myself. You tighten up your boots and keep going at it.” Mitty is passionate about using visual storytelling and digital actions to restore health and abundance to our oceans. She runs SeaLegacy, a nonprofit at the nexus of ocean and climate. Through her photography, she creates images to help people understand the urgency of protecting wild places and the responsibility of being human.

“We come in here asking them: What are you missing in this community? What can we help fix? What can we brainstorm together, and how can we work through this?” That’s the mentality that David Boongullaya, part of GIVE Volunteers, takes when he comes to a community to help it develop. The organization helps communities grow sustainably by building dorms for teachers, schools for students, water tanks for the communities and more with eco-bricks, which are made from plastic trash that support concrete. That’s just one of the ways that GIVE helps communities become more resilient and adaptive to climate change. “This is a spark that we want to set,” says David, about partnering with communities and teaching them about sustainable development. “This is the light that we want to shine.”

David is transforming lithium battery waste into sustainable energy solutions. His company pioneers the creation of affordable energy storage systems for renewable energy sources, with a dual approach: reuse and urban mining. They adopt a circular economy model for lithium batteries, emphasizing extending battery life, facilitating recycling, and minimizing waste. Energy Source actively participates in local educational institutions and fosters strategic partnerships to elevate community awareness. David draws inspiration from the Solar Impulse Foundation, a key player in mapping and promoting sustainable solutions to combat climate change.

David Vili sees a not so distant future where we are making energy in space and bringing it down to Earth. No wires, no batteries, no short storage – “electricity like oxygen,” he says, “available all the time for everybody.” David and his company, Solar Space’s, revolutionary solar technology is bringing us closer to that future. — asks Deepak Ramola, a historian and educator. 



Inspired by his mother, who grew up in the Himalayas without an education and yet grew up to be wise and build a good life for her family, Deepak documents and shares the wisdom of everyday people. “If all 8 billion people gave one life lesson from their experience we’d have a solution bank of 8 billion perspectives for any challenge we face,” says Deepak. 

Climate change is one of those challenges. Deepak collects wisdom from people around the world who are adapting to climate change and protecting the land and uses it educate people everywhere. 

Spreading the wisdom of everyday people

Around 97% of urban yard waste in Hong Kong ends up in landfills, which leads to emission of methane gas. Caroline launched pilot education project to teach property managers and gardeners to practice onsite composting on their housing estate premises. This had proven the perceived odour nuisance do not arise under proper handling of compost materials. Caroline also analysed the opinions from the public and stakeholders on the urban yard waste management, and suggested recommendations on city-wide management framework and strategies like facilities siting, collection strategies, perception on nuisances and distance factors on transport. Nature In situ was set up to help all green space owner to realize onsite composting and advise on minimizing yard waste.

Mario is leading the charge in decarbonizing industries like maritime, oil & gas, and power generation. The company's approach combines deep-tech innovation with industry collaboration to develop and scale products like PureMetrics™ and SlipPure™. These technologies, which focus on accurate GHG measurement and emissions reduction, are seen as promising solutions to climate change. Mario emphasizes the need for policies that incentivize the adoption of such technologies and financial initiatives that support their research and development. He also highlights the urgency of addressing the gap between traditional finance and the requirements for scaling up new climate technology.

The Global Science Academy (GSA) is India’s civil society working on spectrum of topics pertaining to Science, Ocean Science, Environment and Society. “My mother’s family made their living off of the sea, and my father’s family was more focused on the land so I learned about the best of both worlds growing up,” 

says Dr. Hind Al Ameri, a Marine Conservation Scientist at the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi. 

Her work focuses on assessment and conservation of the region’s marine species, especially those that are vulnerable or endangered. “It’s not just about surveys and research,” she says. “All of our work forms the scientific foundation for crafting laws, regulations, fishing bounds and protected areas.” Nature, she says, is part of the solution to fighting climate change. Habitats can actually help us if we take care of them.

Who would have thought that snot could be crucial to healthy oceans. Whale snot, that is. Iain Kerr’s drones, called Snotbots, hover above the ocean surface capturing the blow (or snot) from whales, enabling more comprehensive data collection without disturbing the whales themselves. Scientists can actually analyze DNA, test hormone and stress levels and look at viral and bacterial loads, all of which helps us understand how climate change and human activity  are impacting whales, so we can find ways to protect the oceans and all of their inhabitants.
